ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois softball outfielder Kalyn Harker is one of four MVC student-athletes who earned a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship from the Missouri Valley Conference, the league announced Wednesday. The MVC Faculty Athletics Representatives Committee voted to award postgraduate scholarships to the four student-athletes, due to their exemplary academic and athletic performances. Each will receive a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship from the Conference.
Harker, a native of Lebanon, Ind., maintained a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA throughout her collegiate career while majoring in Biological Sciences. She is a four-year qualifier for the SIU Dean's List and the MVC Academic Honor Roll. Harker earned the league's Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award three times and was named an MVC President's Council Academic Excellence Award recipient this spring. In addition to being a two-time team captain, Harker was active in the community, holding a myriad of community service and campus positions, which included volunteer positions at four different hospitals during her years at SIU. This past year she led SIU with a .361 batting average and earned first-team all-MVC. Harker looks to continue her studies at SIU seeking a degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
The other MVC student-athletes to earn the scholarships were Brooke Brown of UNI (women's basketball); Brogan Austin of Drake (cross country, track & field); and Nick Schroeder of Evansville (men's soccer).
To be eligible for consideration, recipients must have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.40, participated with distinction in a Missouri Valley Conference championship sport for at least two seasons at the nominating institution and must graduate from their institutions within 18 months following selection at the spring meetings of the Faculty Athletics Representative Committee.
Also, the recipients must be accepted for postgraduate studies at an institution of higher learning at the time of receipt of the scholarship. And, the recipients must have completed eligibility for participation in intercollegiate athletics in the academic year in which nominated.
