ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois infielder Ryan Sabo and outfielder Tyler Rolland earned Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete honors, the conference announced on Tuesday. Sabo was named to the first team while Rolland was an honorable mention selection.
In five seasons at the helm of the Saluki Baseball program, head coach Ken Henderson has now produced 14 MVC Scholar-Athlete selections. The 2014-15 squad set program records for the highest fall (3.307) and spring (3.074) semester team GPAs in program history.
"I'm extremely proud of our entire team's academic success and certainly pleased that Ryan and Tyler have been recognized for their work on and off the field," head coach Ken Henderson said. "The academic success is a testament to the work ethic of the young men in this program and the quality and dedication of our academic staff here at SIU."
Sabo started 39 games for the Salukis in 2015 and led the team with a .292 batting average. He finished the season with 40 hits and one home run. Sabo earned a perfect 4.0 GPA and is majoring in finance. The sophomore was one of only two players selected to have a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Rolland finished his Saluki career after starting 43 games in 2015. The departed senior hit .257 with 36 hits in his final season. He graduated with a degree in exercise science with a 3.94 GPA. It was his first career MVC Scholar-Athlete team honor.
