Former Saluki Coonrod named top pitching prospect

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Baseball America announced that former Southern Illinois University pitcher Sam Coonrod was voted as the Best Pitching Prospect of the South Atlantic League. Coonrod was also voted to have the Best Breaking Pitch.
Coonrod, a 2014 fifth-round draft pick of the San Francisco Giants, played for the Salukis from 2012-14. During his SIU career, Coonrod struck-out 199 batters and had an ERA of 3.86. 2014 was a career year for Coonrod in a Saluki uniform, posting a 2.87 ERA with 77 strikeouts.
Playing for the Augusta GreenJackets, Coonrod holds a 6-4 record with an ERA of 3.14. this season. The former Saluki leads his current team with 90 strikeouts in 91.2 innings pitched.
