CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois football program added two mid-year transfers, head coach Nick Hill announced on Thursday. Josh Straughan (quarterback) transferred to SIU from Division II Stillman College, and Craig James (DB/punt returner) transferred from Minnesota.
Josh Straughan is a fifth-year senior quarterback who transferred to SIU from Division II Stillman College, where he was a three-year starter. Straughan threw for more than 5,400 yards at Stillman and was a preseason All-American in 2015 before missing the season with an injury. He graduated in December with a 3.98 GPA in health sciences and has one year of eligibility remaining to play at SIU.
Craig James will be a third-year junior in 2016 after playing the last two seasons at Minnesota. James has served as the Gophers' primary punt returner for the past two seasons. He averaged 8.7 yards per punt return as a true freshman in 2014 with a long of 32. An Edwardsville, Ill., native, James was a three-star recruit coming out of high school and a consensus top-80 defensive back nationally in the recruiting class of 2013.
