CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois track and field teams will travel to Bloomington, Ind. to take part in the two-day Gladstein Invitational, hosted by Indiana University.
The meet will be held at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse, Indiana's indoor track and field complex that features a Mondo-surfaced 200-meter banked track, similar to the one used annually for the NCAA DI Indoor Championships.
Director of track and field/cross country Kathleen Raske sees the Gladstein Invitational as an opportunity for the Salukis to run on a different style track then they are use to, as SIU's home track is a flat 200-meter track.
"As we prepare for championship season, we have to get use to running on several types of tracks," said Raske.
The meet is also an opportunity to compete against top teams from throughout the region, as Indiana, Purdue, Ball State, Xavier, Indiana State and Vanderbilt are just some of the programs that will be competing in Bloomington this weekend.
"This meet is a step forward, for us to use and build off of last week," said Raske. "I expect for our student-athletes to improve, and this is an opportunity to challenge themselves and put themselves in a competitive environment. We always hope great competition brings the best out of our athletes."
SIU's men's team looks to continue its impressive start to the indoor season after having a pair win event titles at the University of Kentucky Invitational last weekend. Junior Kyle Landon leaped into the national rankings, high jumping a personal-best of 2.24m (7'-04.25") to win the event. Landon is now ranked second in the nation while senior Josh Freeman is ranked third in the nation in the shot put. Freeman picked up his second-straight event win, setting a new SIU indoor record with a mark of 19.67m (64'-06.50").
The SIU women will look to keep steadily improving, as the young squad had several personal-bests at the UK Invitational. Senior Alexus Scott placed sixth in both the weight throw and the shot put, while freshman Kezia Martin claimed third in the triple jump and junior Katie Trupp took fourth in the pole vault.
