Series vs. Northern Iowa
The Panthers have won 12-straight at home against the Salukis, including an 11-0 mark at the McLeod Center. SIU's last win in Cedar Falls was at the UNI Dome in 2003, when the Bruce Weber-coached Salukis made 14 3-pointers to win, 88-78, in overtime. Kent Williams and Darren Brooks combined to make 9-of-13 shots from 3-point.
First meeting vs. Northern Iowa
The Salukis edged UNI in Carbondale, 75-73, on Jan. 2, behind a 32-point outing from Anthony Beane. He was 6-of-10 from 3-point range and had 20 points in the first half alone. SIU was 13-of-22 from 3-point overall -- the most 3-pointers made during the Hinson era.
Salukis own nation's longest road winning streak
The Salukis are 8-0 on the road this season -- the best road start in school history and the longest active streak in Division I. There are currently four Division I teams that are unbeaten on the road -- SIU, James Madison (7-0), Saint Joseph's (6-0) and Providence (5-0). Last year, the Salukis were 2-12 in road games. The Salukis are one of five teams in Division I with eight or more road wins, joining Little Rock (9-2), Monmouth (9-4), Navy (8-1), Valparaiso (8-4) and IPFW (8-4). The school record for road wins in a season is 11, set in 2003-04. Eleven times SIU has won eight or more road games.
Only 11 teams with 18 wins
Through games of Jan. 29, the Salukis are tied with 10 other teams, including fellow conference member Evansville, for the most wins in the nation (18).
Dawg Bites
The 18-4 start is SIU's best since Matt Painter's 2004 NCAA Tournament squad opened 24-2, and 17-0 in the MVC. Jack Hartman's 1967 NIT championship team also opened its season 24-2.
The last time SIU swept a season series from an MVC opponent was when it swept Loyola in 2014.
After 22 games last season, the Salukis were 9-13 -- making this season a nine-game improvement over last year.
SIU is 7-2 in games decided by five points or less, compared to 0-7 last year.
Leo Vincent has made 25-straight free throws. The school record is 50, set by Greg Starrick during the 1971-72 season. Other known streaks at SIU include 42 by John Garrett (1972), 31 by Starrick (1970) and 29 by Kent Williams (2001).
In SIU's 18 wins, Tyler Smithpeters is 36-of-66 (.545) from 3-point. He is 1-for-10 (.100) in the four losses.
Bola Olaniyan has fouled out four times this season. The school record is eight, set by Randal Falker (2005, 2007) and Joshua Cross (2000).
High-scoring Salukis
The Salukis average 77.2 points per game and are scoring at a rate not seen at SIU since the Rich Herrin era (1986-1998). Herrin coached 13 seasons at SIU and seven of his teams averaged more than 77 points per game. Last year, Southern averaged 59.6 points.
Anthony Beane by the numbers
Senior G Anthony Beane (6-2, 178, Sr.) has 1,735 career points -- placing him sixth all-time at SIU.
Needs 27 points to pass Darren Brooks into 5th place all-time.
Second in the MVC (behind Evansville's DJ Balentine) and ranks 35th in the nation in scoring (19.8).
At his current pace, he will finish third all-time in scoring at SIU behind only Charlie Vaughn (2,088) and Kent Williams (2,012).
Became only the third player in school history with 1,700 points and 100 steals, joining Kent Williams and Darren Brooks.
Has topped the 30-point mark four times this season. The last Saluki to have four 30-point games was Troy Hudson in 1995-96. The last to have five was Chris Carr in 1994-95.
Has reached double figures in scoring 85 times in his career, reached 20+ points 32 times, and reached 30+ points five times.
Has taken 30.6 percent of SIU's shots while he is on the floor and has played 84.5 percent of the available minutes.
One of 31 players named to the Lou Henson award watch list, which goes to the top Mid-Major player in the nation.
Leo Vincent a spark off the bench
G Leo Vincent (6-1, 179, Jr.) is a leading contender for the league's Sixth Man award. He has not started a game, but is the team's second-leading scorer in conference games (11.8) Against Illinois State on Jan. 12, he became the first Saluki guard other than Anthony Beane to reach 20 points since Desmar Jackson in 2014. He had 24 points and made the game-winning 3-pointer with 24 seconds left.
Beane can get his own shot
When Anthony Beane makes a basket this season, his teammates contribute an assist 31 percent (45-of-145) of the time. When his teammates make a basket, an assist is involved 52 percent of the time.
