Kristie Yang finished as the medalist
The Saluki women's golf team won its second tournament of the fall today at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate in Dickson, Tennessee. Southern bested host school Austin Peay State by two strokes.Â
Senior Kristie Yang was the medalist of the tournament, she shot a 77 in the final round to edge out Austin Peay's Taylor Goodley by one stroke. It is Yang's first tournament win as a Saluki, her two-round score of 148 was the lowest of her career. She is the second Saluki to win a tournament this season. Yang's fellow senior, Brooke Cusumano, won the Loyola Fall Invitational in September.
Mihelich said that Yang continues to play with a lot of confidence.
"She's always had all the shots, but just believing that she can do it is something that she has overcame," she said. "She was paired with the other top two players, so she knew where she stood the whole round. She kept it together and came out one shot ahead."
Junior Alice Ho and Cusumano played a big role in the win as well. The two both picked up strokes on their opening-round scores to help bolster the team and secure the victory. Ho shot a 3-over-par 75 to finish in fifth place and Cusumano was 5-over-par 77 and finished tied for 8th.
"I thought that we might not win because I knew we were going to have to count an 84," Mihelich said. "I didn't realize that the conditions were hard enough that everyone was struggling. Alice finished strong today and Brooke had a better round in a tougher round. Their two scores really saved us."
The tournament win marked the second of the season for Southern. This is the fourth-straight season that the Salukis have won at least two tournaments prior to the winter break and it is the 16th win for head coach Alexis Mihelich at Southern Illinois.Â
The Salukis will now go on a four-month hiatus as the team takes it's winter break. Southern will play again in February at the Ball State Sunshine Invitational at PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
"This is good momentum for the offseason," Mihelich said. "The team enjoyed winning and they want to keep on winning. I know that some of the scores we posted still need to improve. This win will get them excited and keep them going through the winter."
