Strong second round propels Southern to fifth

SIU is second among MVC teams
The Southern Illinois women's golf team started slow but finished strong in the opening two rounds of the MVC Preview in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
After the opening round, the Salukis were tied for 7th with a team score of 310, but as the day heated up so did Southern. SIU shot a team score of 289 in the second round to climb to fifth. The second round score was tied for the second-lowest single-round team score and tied for the second-lowest second-round score in SIU women's golf history. Southern is in second place among MVC teams, only trailing defending-conference champions Wichita State.
Two seniors, Brooke Cusumano and Kristie Yang, led the bounce-back charge for the Salukis. Both players shot under-par in the second round. Yang shot a career-low round of 70 and Cusumano had a 71. Junior Hanna Netisingha, who had a hole-in-one in her practice round, shot even-par 72 in the second round.
Murray State, UMKC and Arkansas State make up the top three and will look to spoil the Missouri Valley Conference party with solid third rounds tomorrow. Wichita State and Southern could easily break into the top three tomorrow with good performances.
The final round of the Missouri Valley Conference Preview will take place tomorrow with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
