Former Southern Illinois guard Anthony Beane was drafted in the second round of the NBA Development League by the Oklahoma City Blue on Sunday. He was the 26th overall pick in the draft.
Featuring 22 teams, the NBADL is the NBA's official minor league. At the start of the 2016-17 season, the NBA featured 135 players, or 30 percent of league-wide players, who had NBADL experience.
Beane finished his career at Southern in 2016 as the school's third all-time leading scorer with 1,917 career points. He is tied with Mike Glenn for the SIU Area scoring record with 885 points. The son of Saluki assistant Anthony Beane Sr., he was a two-time All-MVC player, who reached double figures in scoring 93 times in his career, surpassed 20 points 36 times, and reached 30 or more points seven times.
Several months after the 2016 season, Beane suffered a significant ankle and leg injury that required surgery and a lengthy rehab. He rehabilitated ahead of schedule and is cleared to play this season. The NBADL season begins play on Nov. 11.
The most recent Saluki player to play in the NBADL was Desmar Jackson with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in 2015. The highest drafted player in school history was Jamaal Tatum, who was the No. 4 overall pick by the Idaho Grabs in 2007.
