Hutchins, Lambert earn Big Stick awards in Northwoods League

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Nick Hutchins and Greg Lambert earned Big Stick awards from the Northwoods League, the league announced on Wednesday. The award goes to the player with the highest batting average at each position.Â
Lambert, a junior for the Salukis in 2016-17, hit .330 for the Willmar Stingers this summer, the best average for any first baseman in the Northwoods League. His average ranked sixth in the NWL overall among 102 qualified players. He led the leauge in RBIs with 66 and set a Willmar record in that category. He ranked second in the league in hits (93) and fifth in doubles (18).Â
Hutchins, also a junior for the Salukis in 2016-17, hit .325 for the Kalamazoo Growlers this summer, the best average for any catcher in the leauge. Hutchins ranked 12th in the league in average overall. Among qualfied catchers, Hutchins also led the league in hits and doubles while piling up 47 RBIs.Â
Southern Illinois was the only program in the NWL to have two players earn the Big Stick award this summer. Rawlings has been rewarding the top hitters in the Northwoods League since 2007 in addition to honoring the best fielders since 2002. To honor their achievement, the nine award winners will receive an engraved bat from Rawlings.
