LOUISVILLE, KY. – The Southern Illinois University women's and men's swimming and diving team will head to Kentucky for a two-day invitational hosted by the University of Louisville. Joining the Cardinals and Salukis at the meet will be Wright State and Ohio University.
This will be the team's first competition since the quad meet at the University of Kentucky on November 4. The Salukis held their own against that weekend against nationally ranked competition, grabbing nearly 30 top-ten finishes over the course of the meet. SIU will face ranked competition again this week in Louisville. UL women's team is currently ranked No. 8 in the country and the men's team sits at No. 10. This will be the first top-ten opponent the team will face this season, and the third top-25 program the team has squared off with in the last three weeks.
The Salukis have not competed at Louisville since 2014. That year both the men and women's teams placed 5th out of five teams. The men's team was lead by now senior, Andre Brilhante, and junior, Michael Wolfe. Brilhante captured 4th place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.11, which was only two second behind the first place finisher, SIU grad Till Pallmann. Brilhante would also get a sixth place finish out of 32 in the 100-yard freestyle. Wolfe would grab second place in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Wolfe, just a freshman at the time, would be the youngest finisher in the event inside the top six.
Kelsie Walker and Sarah James led the women's team. Walker had herself quite the weekend, qualifying for three finals and then placing in the top ten in all three. Her best finish on the weekend was third place in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Sarah James qualified for the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke finals. She would finish 8th in the 100-yard and 11th in the 200-yard in the finals.
SIU will compete in prelims at 10 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and compete in finals competition at 6 p.m. the first two nights and at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The invitational will have live results as they come in and they can be found HERE.
