LEXINGTON, KY. -Â Â The Southern Illinois University swimming and diving teams completed a two day meet against nationally ranked competition today. The Salukis took on the University of Kentucky, the University of Missouri, and Northwestern in a quad meet. SIU racked up 28 top-ten finishes over the course of the meet.
The 40 event meet started off with the 200-yard freestyle relay. Both the men's and women's relay teams would finish in sixth place to get the dawgs off and going. Senior, Filippo Dell'Olio, would keep the momentum going, placing 5th in the 200-IM two events later. His performance would be followed up with one of three top finishes for the Salukis, as Bryn Handley would swim to a time of 4:52.26 in the 500-yard freestyle on the women's side. Handley would get another top three finish later in the meet, finishing second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:07.80).
On the men's side the Salukis would be led by their upperclassman. Seniors, Dell'Olio, Andre Brilhante, and Bobby Wood, would get the top Saluki time in eight total events at the end of the two day competition. Juniors, Alex Crawford, Michael Wolfe, and Joao Facciotti, would claim remaining five top times for the Salukis. The best finishes of the day would come from Brilhante, Wolfe, and Dell'Olio. Brilhante swam to a fast time of 20.91 in the 50-yard freestyle, which was good enough for a fifth place finish. Wolfe would also capture a fifth place finish, swimming to a time in the 9:26.10 in the longest race of the meet, the 1,000-yard freestyle.Â
Outside of Handley's two top-three finishes, the women's team would pile up 11 other top-ten finishes. All four relay events would feature a top ten finish by the Dawgs, including a fifth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Samantha Parsons would claim three of those top-ten finishes on the day, her best finish coming in the 200-yard breaststroke, which was third best in the stacked field.Â
On the board the Salukis would be led by two freshman, Madeleine Cieszynski and Kai Hoffmann-Dussome. Cieszynski would finish 14th in the 3-meter and 12th in 1-meter, while Hoffmann-Dussome would grab two top-ten finishes, 7th in the 3-meter and 10th in 1-meter.Â
Both teams will be back in action Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky.
