CHICAGO, Ill. – The Saluki women's golf team dropped 12 strokes on the second day of the MVC Championship to head into the final round of play in fourth place overall. SIU shot a 298 team score on Monday to put the Salukis at 608 through 36 holes. This is the fourth time the Salukis have shot below 300 this season.
After leading all individuals after the first round of the tournament with a one-under 71, Brooke Cusumano struggled in the second round with an 81 bumping her to 16th place. Her teammates, however, stepped up to keep the Salukis' score low, just 11 strokes behind Bradley in third place.
Freshman Sun Young Jung finished with the lowest round for the Salukis, shooting an even par. Jung dropped 11 strokes from her first round score after shooting an 83 on the opening day. After shooting 16 holes on par, plus a birdie and a bogie, Jung is tied for 27th place with a 155 score.
Hanna Netisingha showed significant improvement on Monday as well, dropping six strokes for a 73, just one over par, to tie with Cusumano and three others at 16th place. Kristie Yang also dropped six strokes from her first round score, shooting a 77 on the day for 40th place.
"Hanna, Sun and Kristie really bounced back today. They were more relaxed ad the good shots came to them," SIU head coach Alexis Mihelich said.
Senior Mattie Lindner had a standout moment on the course today, with an eagle on the 18th hole, her last of the day. At six over par heading into her final hole, Lindner finished the par-5, 481-yard hole in three strokes, putting her at a 76 on the day. Lindner improved her score by one stroke, and is tied for 21st place.
"Mattie hit the perfect shot into the 18th hole to set herself up for an eight-foot eagle putt on her final hole. She knew she was going to make it to get her round back," Mihelich said.
The Salukis are shooting 26 strokes lower than their score at last year's MVC Championships. After the second round of the 2015 tournament, SIU was in fourth place with a 634 team score. Two-time defending champion and pre-championship favorite Wichita State (586) holds a seven-stroke lead over second-place Indiana State (593) after to rounds of play. Bradley is in third after 36 holes with a 597.
The third and final round of the MVC Championship will begin at 8:30 tomorrow morning. Live scoring can be found here.
