TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Last weekend the Southern Illinois track and field teams combined to bring home seven wins, including SIU sweeping the outstanding performer awards at the Tom Botts Invitational. This weekend, the Salukis will be competing in their second-straight scored meet of the outdoor season at the Pacesetter Invitational, beginning Friday.
MVC foe Indiana State will play host and DePaul and Saint Louis will join Southern in competition at the Gibson Track & Field Complex. The Salukis, Sycamores and Billikens will again vie for a team title, as all three competed at last weekend's Tom Botts Invitational.
The women's and men's hammer throw and javelin are the only events scheduled for Friday night, with women's hammer kicking the meet off at 5 p.m.
The Salukis will once again be represented in women's hammer by DeAnna Price. Price, the no. 1 ranked hammer thrower in the nation and the reigning MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, has won five-straight event titles and has recorded at least one throw of 70m or more at each meet this season. Freya Block, who is coming off a third place finish at the Tom Botts Invitational will also throw, as will Alexus Scott, who is scheduled to throw the hammer for the first time this season.
Southern will be represented in men's hammer by Bradley Sauer, Nate Dyer, and Isaac Ingram. Sauer set a new PR in the hammer last Saturday, uncorking a toss of 64.35m (211'-01") to finish second a week ago to bump up to no. 9 in the NCAA West Region. Ingram also set a new personal-best last Saturday, throwing 55.27m (181'-04") to take seventh.
No Salukis are entered to compete in men's javelin, but Southern has three entrants, including two first timers, on the women's side. Pole Vaulters Cara Engel and Katelyn Brown will throw the javelin in competition for the first time in their respective collegiate careers, while Stephanie Milroy is also set to throw after setting a lifetime-best with a toss of 40.72m (133'-07") at the Tom Botts Invitational.
Saturday's festivities begin with six events scheduled to start at 12 p.m. The women's pole vault, high jump, shot put and 5000m, as well as the men's discus throw and long jump are all set to begin at noon in what no doubt will be a busy day for the Dawgs.
