CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University men's basketball coach Barry Hinson announced today the program has signed junior college guard Jonathan Wiley from Panola College in Texas. A 6-foot-6, 190-pound native of Houston, Texas, he will have two years of eligibility for the Salukis.
At Panola last season, Wiley started the first 21 games before becoming the team's sixth man in the final 12 contests. He averaged 12.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, and was named honorable mention All-Conference. The Ponies finished 24-9 overall and 13-6 in second place in the seven-team North Zone of Region XIV.
"We felt we needed to add a guard with length who could help us defend bigger wings on the perimeter," said Hinson. "Jonathan has the size and skill level we were looking for, and he's also a terrific young man. We're excited to add him to the Saluki family."
Wiley originally signed with Texas State out of high school and played one season for the Bobcats, in which he averaged 2.0 points and 1.4 rebounds in nine games in 2015.
In high school, Wiley played three seasons on the varsity squad for St. Pius X in Houston. He averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior and was named First-Team All-State. He was also a two-time District MVP.
Wiley is the third player to sign with SIU this spring, joining Iowa Western Community College forward Thik Bol (6-8, 205, Jr.) and Victory Rock Prep (Fla.) guard Jeremy Roscoe (6-2, 185, Fr.).
