EVANSVILLE, Ind. - A late inning rally by Southern Illinois fell just short in a 4-3 loss to Evansville on Sunday.
The Purple Aces (26-23, 8-10 MVC) held Southern (30-20-1, 11-7 MVC) scoreless for the first six innings, limiting the Salukis to four hits in the stretch. Two runs in the third and a run in the fifth and sixth innings staked the home team to a 4-0 advantage over the Salukis.
The Salukis made it a game in the seventh inning, scoring two runs on RBI hits from Will Farmer and Dyllin Mucha to make it a 4-2 game. SIU had a chance to add a couple more runs in the inning with the bases loaded and only one out, but a flyout and groundout ended the threat.
The SIU rally continued into the eighth, when Farmer was once again able to plate another Saluki run to make it a 4-3 game. The rally fell short though in the ninth, as a strikeout with the game-tying run on third base ended the game. The Salukis left 11 runners on base. SIU finished the game with nine hits, led by Greg Lambert who went 4-for-5 with a double.
Southern will play one last midweek game on Tuesday, when the team travels to the Billiken Sports Center in St. Louis, Mo. First pitch between SIU and Saint Louis is 5 p.m.
