CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois senior guard Anthony Beane, who finished third all-time in scoring at SIU with 1,917 career points, recently completed an internship in the Media Services office of Saluki Athletics. He wrote this report of his basketball activities since the season ended in.
"After my final game in a Saluki uniform, it was hard moving on, trying to figure out what my next move was going to be. After leaving the conference tournament I sat down with my father and Coach Hinson, and had a long talk with them on what the next step for me was going to be.
The next step would be to find an agent. Luckily for me there were different agents at nearly every game, so finding one wasn't going to be a problem. The hardest part was going to be finding the right one, since many of them were from places such as the West Coast. The reason why you have to be careful hiring an agent from far away is you don't really have a chance to have face-to-face interactions with them. You want to get the chance to really know who they are as a person and what their step-by-step plan is for you and your future.
We narrowed our decision down to three different agents that came to Carbondale from Indiana, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. All three of them took me and my family out to eat at Applebee's to discuss what their plans for me as a professional athlete were going to be.
After meeting with them, we took a week or so to decide what would be best for me and we came to our conclusion without any hesitation. We chose the agency out of San Francisco called Pensack Sports Management. What made this agency stand out was the fact that they weren't only focused on the basketball aspect of my life but, they were also concerned with my life after basketball, which stuck out to my family and I in many different ways.
After signing with this agency it wasn't even 24 hours before I received my first phone call from them talking about different workouts and camps we were trying to get into and why it was important for me. We talked about many different things such as nutrition, my new workout regimen, and even little things such as sleep, stretching, etc.
The good thing about being a part of an organization like my agency is they are professionals in almost every area, including strength and conditioning. Half of the workouts I received from my agent were hard for me to understand, and two individuals were a huge help for me when it came to learning my new strength and conditioning regimen. Josh Swan, who used to be a teammate of mine during my freshmen year and who is now a strength and conditioning coach, and director of operations John Clancy, both made it easy for me. I was glad to see that my weight training wasn't as intense as it used to be. My new workout regimen consisted of a little bit of weights but tons of resistance training.
With the year our team had there were many different NBA scouts at numerous games, and a couple that came to our practices. My agent stepped in and started making calls to the different teams that came to our games and he was able to schedule when they wanted to bring me in for workouts, which will take place late May and early June. Until my first workout, I'm continuing to stay on top of my game and make sure I am ready for everything.
I appreciate the support of all Saluki fans during my career at SIU and I will continue to work hard and make you proud during my pro career."
