SIU ends the regular season with a four-game road swing, starting with a trip to Evansville for a single game on Wednesday. The Salukis and Aces will play a single game at Cooper Stadium at 5 p.m. CT. SIU and UE played a doubleheader two weeks ago, with Evansville coming away with two one-run wins. After the Evansville game, Southern closes the regular season with a trip to Wichita State for a three-game series this weekend.
Southern Illinois...
- has a .969 fielding percentage in conference play, the best mark in the MVC.
- pitched 15 shutouts this season. SIU already has the most shutouts since 2007 (18), and all three pitchers have already thrown at least one shutout.
- has only allowed only 11 home run in 310.0 innings pitched. Everyone else in the league has allowed at least 20 home runs. SIU has allowed only one home run in the last 83.0 innings.
- has the lowest team ERA (2.30) in the conference.
- is out-homering opponents 34-11 this season. SIU has 101 extra-base hits, compared to just 54 for opponents.
- clinched its 35th-consecutive winning record at home. SIU is 12-7 at Charlotte West Stadium this year.
- hosts the 2016 MVC Championships at Charlotte West Stadium.
- is 201-76 (.726) at home in its 14th seasons at Charlotte West Stadium.
- dedicated the field at Charlotte West Stadium for Hall-of-Fame Coach Kay Brechtelsbauer. Coach B won 633 games in 32 seasons as head coach of the Salukis, retiring as the MVC's all-time leader in overall and conference wins. She remains the fourth-winningest coach in conference history.
JONES FINALIST FOR NATIONAL FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Brianna Jones is a finalist for the NFCA National Freshman of the Year. She has 10 shutouts this season, including one last weekend against UNI, which had only been shut out by SEC teams in 2016. No other freshman in the nation has more than six shutouts. Jones's 1.80 ERA, .222 opposing batting average and 21 wins all lead the Missouri Valley Conference.
DOVER HOLDS SECOND-BEST ERA IN MVC
Savanna Dover has the MVC's second-best ERA in league games at just 1.58. She has six of the team's 13 Valley wins, and MVC opponents are hitting just .218 against the sophomore. She is the only pitcher in the league who hasn't allowed a home run in MVC play--and Dover hasn't allowed a home run to anyone at all this year in 114.2 innings.
PITCHING SHINES VS. UNI
Southern's pitching is coming off perhaps its best weekend of the year. Northern Iowa entered the weekend with 26 home runs in its last 10 games. The Panthers had hit at least three home runs in all seven MVC series before coming to Carbondale, and they had only been shutout three times all year--all three by SEC teams. In three games, Southern's pitching held UNI to 11-for-70 from the plate with zero home runs. Both Dover and Jones threw shutouts to give SIU the 2-1 series win.
HARRE, JONES NAMED MVC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Shaye Harre and Brianna Jones earned MVC weekly honors on Monday, after the Dawgs took two of three from Northern Iowa over the weekend. Harre was named MVC Player of the Week after going 4-for-7 with three doubles and two RBIs. She slugged 1.000 and reached at a .667 clip. Jones allowed only a single run in 14.0 innings, including her 10th shutout of the season on Sunday, the most in the NCAA among freshmen. She earned MVC Newcomer of the Week from the league for the performance, the third time this season Jones has been named MVC Newcomer of the Week.
