Errors hurt Salukis in 6-3 loss to Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Two errors against Southern Illinois in the eighth inning proved to be the difference in a 6-3 loss to Illinois on Wednesday at Illinois Field. The Saluki defense was charged with four errors in the game.

"We just made too many mistakes today," head coach Ken Henderson said. "We did a lot of good things and I thought that Bryce Sablotny did a good job. When you have a game that is that close and on the road, you can't make that many mistakes."

The Illini (23-19) went out in front in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead. It took until the fifth inning for the Salukis (25-19-1) to piece together some offense. With runners on first and second after a single and a walk, Greg Lambert poked a ball into the outfield for an RBI double to tie the game. A wild pitch from Illini pitcher Quinten Sefcik against the very next batter brought in the second run for Southern. An error in the sixth inning against the Salukis helped the Illini tie the game at 2-2.

The momentum swung into the Illini's favor in the eighth inning, as the home team was able to take advantage of a pair of Saluki errors, scoring four runs for a 6-2 advantage. SIU was unable to rally in the ninth, scoring one run in the frame.

SIU will continue a seven-game road trip with a three-game series at Missouri State starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Chad Whitmer gets the start for Southern against MSU.
