Harre earns Academic All-America honor

25th Academic All-America honor in Saluki Softball history
Southern Illinois first baseman Shaye Harre earned second-team Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America, the organization announced Thursday. Harre was a first-team All-MVC and All-Region player in 2016 and also holds a 3.88 cumulative GPA in animal sciences.
Harre's honor is the 25th Academic All-America honor earned by Saluki Softball student-athletes all-time. SIU now has back-to-back Academic All-Americans; Harre follows Kalyn Harker, who was a first-team Academic All-American last year. Saluki Softball's 25 Academic All-America honors rank second in NCAA softball history, trailing only Nebraska.
Harre, a junior in 2016, was one of the most dominant hitters in Division I softball. She earned first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference and All-Mideast Region after hitting .368, slugging .728 and reaching base at an MVC-best .517 clip. She hit 13 doubles (t-6th in SIU single-season history) and 12 home runs (t-4th in SIU single-season history), and she became the first MVC player in 13 seasons to draw at least 1.0 walk per MVC game.
To be eligible, players must have been in their second year at an institution with at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and have earned first-team Academic All-District honors.Â
