Salukis tied for third after first day at Drake Creek

Back-to-back team scores of 305 have SIU knocking on the door of it's first top-five finish
Women's golf head coach Alexis Mihelich talked about bouncing back from a disappointing season opener one week ago. Her team is doing just that at the Murray State Drake Creek Invitational in Ledbetter, Ky.
After the first two rounds Southern is tied for third with Akron after shooting team scores of 305 in both the first and second round. The Salukis are 16 strokes behind first-place Western Kentucky and eight strokes back from Murray State's second-place team.Â
Individually, two Salukis are in strong position to get their first tournament victories of the 2016-17 season. Senior Brooke Cusumano shot a 73 in the first round and a 74 in the second and sits in fifth place after two rounds. Cusumano is just one stroke short of being in a five-way-tie for the lead. Junior Alice Ho also had a strong performance in the first round at Drake Creek Golf Course. Ho shot a 75 in both rounds to sit at 6-over-par 150.
Four players are tied at the top of the leaderboard. Western Kentucky's Georgina Blackman, Lipscomb's Mary Joiner and Murray State's Jane Watts all sit in first place at 2-over-par 146. Cusumano is one stroke back of the leaders and Ho is just 4 strokes off of the top spot.
Play at the Murray State Drake Creek Invitational continues tomorrow with the final round.
