Josh Straughan named MVFC Newcomer of the Week

ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois quarterback Josh Straughan has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Sunday evening. Straughan earned the honor for the second time in three weeks.
Straughan was nearly flawless in SIU's 50-17 win over Murray State on Saturday. Straughan went 27-for-34 passing with 289 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions in the game. He completed 12-straight passes early in the game, and his 79.4 percent completion percentage ranked fourth in SIU single-game history. Through three games, Straughan has thrown six touchdowns and has yet to turn the ball over. He ranks sixth nationally in passing yards and 15th in passing touchdowns this season.
Southern Illinois has a bye week next weekend before starting conference play with a trip to Northern Iowa on October 1. SIU's next home game is October 8 vs. South Dakota State.
