Saluki softball added a third player in the early signing player today.
Â
Nicole Johnson will transfer to Southern from nearby Rend Lake Community College and join the Salukis as a junior. Johnson is an outfielder who throws and bats left-handed.
Â
"Nicole is a very good defensive outfielder," head coach Kerri Blaylock said. "She is fast and does a great job getting on base. She is a great competitor that I have had my eye on since she started at Rend Lake. She is such a quality young lady and we are very happy she has decided to join our program."
As a freshman at Rend Lake, Johnson hit .388 and excelled in the classroom earning a spot on the NJCAA All-Academic team. She was also a member of the President's and Vice-President's List.
Johnson is originally from Johnston City, Illinois and was a teammate of current Saluki Bailee Pulley at Johnston City High School. Johnson was named to the All-Conference team four years in a row for the Indians and hit .534 as a senior. Her on-field accolades earned her an invite to play in the Southern Illinois Select All-Star Game.
Â
This is the third player Southern has added during the early-signing period. On November 9, the first day of the early-signing period, the Salukis added Ashley Wood, a shortstop from Orland Park, Illinois, and Sidney Sikes, from Kaufman, Texas who plays third and catcher. All three student-athletes will join the Salukis in the fall of 2018 as first-year players.
