ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Southern Illinois senior forward Sean O'Brien was named Second-Team All-Missouri Valley Conference, as the league office announced its All-Conference teams on Tuesday. SIU junior center Thik Bol was named to the All-Defense team.
As expected, players from Wichita State and Illinois State dominated the All-Conference squad, accounting for seven of the 15 selections. The Shockers and Redbirds tied for the league championship with 17-1 records and no other team finished with a winning record in league play.
O'Brien averaged 12.4 points for SIU this season and was second in the MVC in rebounding (8.5 rpg). He also ranks ninth in the league in field goal percentage (.513) and set a personal best with 85 assists. O'Brien has been especially tough in league play, averaging 13.4 points and 9.1 rebounds. He has nine double-doubles on the season, the most by a Saluki player since Mamadou Seck in 2012.
Bol ranks second in the MVC and 26th in the nation in blocked shots, averaging 2.35 blocks per game. He is coming off a career-high seven blocks against Loyola and has 20 in the last four games. On the season, he has 73 blocks, which ranks fifth in single-season school history.
Each school has four votes for the All-Conference team (head coach, SID, beat writer, radio announcer) and schools may not vote for their own players. The MVC Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year selections will be announced on Thursday.
