Salukis finish in sixth
The Saluki women's golf team finished in sixth place at the Bradley Spring Break Invitational in Dallas today.
The Salukis started the final round at a disadvantage. Senior Kristie Yang suffered a back injury during the round yesterday and was forced to withdraw prior to the start of play today. The injury left Southern with little room for error since the team would not be able to drop any scores in the final round.
Despite the injury, the Salukis made the best of the situation. Senior Brooke Cusumano and junior Alice Ho both shot two-over par 73s to help turn in a team score of 306 for the best overall performance of the tournament for SIU.
Cusumano went one-stroke under par through her final six holes to help her to a tie for fourth with Wichita State's Taryn Torgerson. It was Cusumano's eighth-straight top-10 finish and her fourth top-five of the season.Â
Ho had her best performance of the tournament by far on Tuesday. The junior from Wadsworth, Ohio shaved eight strokes off of the 81 she shot in the first and second round to move her six spots up the leaderboard to a tie for 25th. Ho eagled the par 5 10th hole to provide a huge boost to her round. She led the field in par 5 scoring on the final day, averaging 4.25 strokes per hole.
Junior Hanna Netisingha shot in the 70s in all three rounds throughout the event to finish tied for 20th.
Southern finished third among the six Missouri Valley Conference teams at the Bradley Spring Break Invitational. Northern Illinois was crowned as the tournament champion. The Huskies led from start to finish. They finished with a 19 stroke lead over second place Bradley. Brielle Ward completed the sweep for the Huskies with her individual medalist finish. She finished 10 strokes ahead of Danielle Nicholson from Akron.
The Salukis are back in action on Friday in Beaumont, Texas at the Lamar Challenge.
