CARBONDALE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University softball team lost to sister school SIUE, 4-0, on Wednesday.Â
Brianna Jones got the start for the Salukis and pitched six strong innings. She ran into some trouble early, allowing multiple baserunners in each of the first two innings, however she was able to hold the Cougars scoreless in both frames.Â
In the top of the third the Cougars scored three runs. SIUE started the inning with singles from three of the first four batters. One run scored on the third single, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead with runners still at the corners. In the next at bat, a ball squirted by Jessa Thomas, scoring one more and advancing a runner to second base. With one out, the Cougars hit a ball into the right center gap. Merri Anne Patterson tracked it down to make the catch. Even though the out was recorded, the runner at second tagged and made it all the way to home to score the third run in the inning.Â
Innings three through five featured dominant pitching from the Cougars. SIU only reached two on base in the three-inning stretch with no hits. Jones kept pace, allowing just one base runner the next three innings. SIUE added one more to the board in the top of the seventh with a solo home run. The homer made the score, 4-0.
SIU finished the game with four hits and 11 strikeouts. The loss dropped its record to 17-15 and 5-2 at home. Southern will be back in action this weekend with a three-game series at Illinois State.
