For the fourth time this season, and a program-record sixth time in her career, senior Brooke Cusumano has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week.
Cusumano earned the award following her victory this week at the Saluki Invitational. The St. Louis, Mo. native shot a 73 in the opening round and carded a 71 in the second round to score at even par for the tournament. Her scores in the two rounds of the event were her best in competition at Hickory Ridge Golf Course, the Salukis' home course. With her under-par second round, she moved into second on the single season list at SIU for rounds at or below par. It was Cusumano's second victory of the season and her first at the Saluki Invitational.
With her sixth career Golfer of the Week award, Cusumano surpassed Kelly Gerlach to become the most decorated in program history. Gerlach wracked up five weekly honors from 2004-07. Cusumano is now tied for the 12th-most Golfer of the Week awards in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) history. Bradley's Danielle Lemek holds the all-time record with 19 awards.
This marks the sixth time a Saluki has won Golfer of the Week this season, which are the most since the 2011-12 season when Southern also won the award six times. In addition to Cusumano's four weekly honors, senior Kristie Yang has been named the Golfer of the Week twice this year as well.
The Salukis next tournament is the MVC Championships at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, from April 16-18.
