With 36 holes still to play at the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championships, Southern sits in 7th place.
Â
Through the opening 18 holes, the Salukis fought a tough Dalhousie Golf Club on their way to shooting a team score of 318. Southern is 16 strokes behind the leaders, Missouri State and four strokes out of the top five.
Â
"We had a really strong start, but didn't finish as well towards the end," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "We're not that far out of the lead. We have two more rounds and we can try to get some back. We just have to take it one shot at a time from here."
Â
The Salukis had 52 pars, the second most in the opening round. Southern is also tied for second on Par 5 scoring, averaging 5.4 strokes per hole.
Â
Junior Hanna Netisingha led the way for Southern. She shot a three-over par 75 and is tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard. The junior tied together five straight pars on the back-nine and finished with 13 total, tying for the second most of the round. Netisingha also birdied the 17th hole, which played as the fourth-most difficult hole of the round.
Â
In order to make a run up the leaderboard, the Salukis will need to see lower scores from the remainder of the lineup. Neitisngha was the only player to score in the 70's in the first round.
Â
Missouri State leads the championship thanks in large part to Verena Gimmy, the tournament's individual leader. She was the only player in the round to score under par after she fired a 69. She has a three-stroke lead over Indiana State's Marissa Uradomo and Evansville's Kayla Katterhenry, who both shot even par rounds of 72.
Â
The Salukis will look to bounce back and make a charge up the leaderboard tomorrow in the second round of the conference championship. The start time has been pushed back to a 1 p.m. shotgun start due to inclement weather in the morning.
