EVANSVILLE, IND. - Southern Illinois University put up 10 runs in game two of the doubleheader to defeat Evansville, 10-7, avenging a 1-0 walk-off loss in game one. SIU has yet to be swept in the Missouri Valley Conference, as it improved its conference record to 10-7 and remained tied for fourth place with Evansville.
Game one showcased a pitcher's duel between SIU's Brianna Dover and UE's Morgan Florey. Both pitched complete games. In the first three innings, six Salukis were set down on strikes and no one reached base until the fourth. Florey finished the game with 12 strikeouts and allowed only two hits.Â
Jones matched Florey's early dominance. Through the first three innings the Saluki sophomore allowed only two baserunners and left both stranded.Â
The outcome was decided in the bottom of the seventh inning. Evansville led off with a double, followed by an infield single that put runners at the corners with nobody out. Susan Norris pinch hit, worked a 2-1 count, and then roped a single to left field for the walk-off win.Â
Game two of the doubleheader featured a combined 17 runs and 12 hits.Â
SIU plated three runs in the top of the first inning. Maddy Vermejan started the run parade with an RBI single to left field. It was the first of two RBIs for Vermejan in the game. Shaye Harre knocked a double into the gap, scoring two more Salukis.Â
In the second inning, SIU scored three more runs and did it with only one hit by Vermejan, as Evansville's pitching had trouble finding the strike zone.
Evansville responded in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run from Norris, making the score 6-2.Â
The third inning featured more small ball by SIU, as it picked up one more run off a sacrifice fly from Susie Baranski. Harre lead off the inning with her second double of the game, her 15th of the season. After today she is only one two-bagger away from tying SIU's all-time record for doubles in a career.Â
Southern took a 7-2 lead into the fourth inning and added three more. Merri Anne Patterson belted a no doubter three-run shot over the left field wall to give the Salukis a 10-2 lead. It was the fifth home run of the season for Patterson. In the inning, Harre also drew her 46th walk of the season, breaking SIU's single season record for walks. Harre cracked the top 10 in three of her four years at Southern.Â
In the bottom of the half of the fourth the momentum shifted into Evansville's favor. The Purple Aces scored four runs in the inning and then tacked on one more in the fifth, making the score 10-7. In the two innings the Aces homered two more times. They finished the game with three total.Â
After the final home run by Evansville, Brianna Jones came in to pitch in relief for SIU and set the Aces down in order in the sixth and seventh to close out the game. Jones finished the day with four strikeouts, gave up nine hits, and pitched nine innings.
SIU has a few days off before welcoming Wichita State to Carbondale for a three-game series this weekend. The two teams are scheduled to play two games on Saturday and one on Sunday.
