TERRE HAUTE, IND. - Shaye Harre blasted a three-run home run in game two of a doubleheader versus Indiana State to lift Southern Illinois to a 9-1 lead before the game was suspended due to rain. SIU (26-22) lost the opener, 2-1, and will resume game two tomorrow at 10 a.m., plus the third game of the series.
Harre became the Salukis' all-time record holder for runs batted in with 149. She now holds the record for walks in a season, doubles in a single game, and RBIs.
Indiana State (21-26) took game one with a pair of runs in the third innning. The contest started off with a triple by Susie Baranski in the top of the first inning. Eyrika Brandenburg hit a sacrifice fly to center field, easily scoring Baranski for SIU's only run of the game. The Salukis left eight runners on base the rest of the game.
Brianna Jones pitched all six innings for the Dawgs. She cruised through the first two innings, holding the Sycamores scoreless. It wasn't until the bottom of the third before Indiana State got on the board. INS started the inning with a walk and a bunt single, putting runners at second and first with no outs. The two runners were then bunted over to second and third for the first out of the inning. Up next was the number three hitter for the Sycamores and she hit a double down the left field line, scoring the two base runners.Â
Jones ended the game with four strikeouts and gave up only five hits in a loss.
Game two of the doubleheader featured a breakthrough on offense for the Salukis. Southern got on the board in the third inning, plating three runs. With one out in the inning, both Baranski and Brandenburg walked. Â Harre then sent a no doubter over the right field wall for her 30th career home run and seventh of the season. It was RBIs 147-149, making her SIU's career RBI leader.Â
After Harre's homer the Saluki offense added three more runs in the top of the fifth and then again in the sixth. Katelyn Massa and Sydney Jones both had two-run singles, and Brandenburg had an RBI single.Â
In the bottom of the sixth Southern led, 9-1. Nicole Doyle recorded the first out of the frame and worked a 3-2 count on the next batter before a thunderstorm halted the game until tomorrow.
