Massa earns Newcomer of the Week honors

CARBONDALE, ILL. - Katelyn Massa has been named the Missouri Valley Conference's Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday. This is the first weekly honor of Massa's collegiate career, and the fourth weekly award SIU has earned this season. Â
Massa hit .500 at the plate last week for the Salukis, as she went 7-for-14 with a walk. The Grover, Mo. native led the team in batting average, runs batted in (7), hits (7), total bases (13), and slugging percentage (.929). In Southern's three-game set with Illinois State, Massa hit .545 and had seven RBIs, including a pair of home runs in SIU's 12-7 win over the Redbirds in game two of the series. In doing so, the freshman catcher tied the school record for home runs in a single game.
The Salukis are back in action on Wednesday, April 5, when they host the St. Louis Billikens. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
