ST. LOUIS - For the second time this season, Southern Illinois senior pitcher Chad Whitmer has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week. Whitmer threw eight innings of one-run ball in Southern's 4-1 win over Dallas Baptist on Friday afternoon.Â
Whitmer pitched eight complete innings and allowed just one run while striking out eight in the victory. The senior limited the high-powered Patriots to just five hits and a .172 average. His game ERA was 1.12 and he led SIU to its third-straight Friday night win this season. His win extended SIU's then-win streak to five games, a season high.
Whitmer earned the honor for the second time this year, having also earned it after striking out 13 in a complete-game win over Indiana State. He is the first SIU pitcher to earn the honor multiple times in a season since P.J. Finigan earned it three times in 2005. The honor marks the third Pitcher of the Week honor for SIU this season. Along with Whitmer's two honors, closer Ryan Netmeyer earned the award in March after collecting three saves without allowing a hit in a week.Â
Whitmer has led SIU to three-straight Friday night wins. In that span, he has a 1.48 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 24.1 innings.Â
SIU hosts Illinois on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in Itchy Jones Stadium. The Salukis are looking for a season sweep of the Illini, having won twice earlier this year in Champaign. This weekend, Missouri State comes to Carbondale for a three-game series. The Bears will come to SIU with a perfect 11-0 mark in MVC play.Â
