Comeback Falls Short for Saluki Volleyball at Murray State

Southern rallied from an 0-2 hole but fell just short in set five, 16-14.
The Southern Illinois volleyball team rallied from an 0-2 hole behind a season-high 13 blocks to force a fifth set against the Murray State Racers, but the Salukis comeback fell just short as the Racers pulled out the 3-2 (17-25, 26-28, 25-19, 25-22, 14-16) victory Tuesday night in Racer Arena.
After dropping the first two sets, SIU rallied to handily win the third set, 25-19 and take set four, 25-22. The Salukis scored four-straight points with the Racers on set point to tie the score 14-14 in set five, but Murray State was able to hold on and secure the win. Southern limited Murray State to a .167 hitting percentage and recorded season-bests in digs (86) and blocks (13.0).
The Salukis were led by preseason All-MVC selection Andrea Estrada, who finished with a team-best 13 kills on 45 attempts. In doing so, she moved into seventh on SIU's all-time kills list, as she passed Deb Heyne (1991-94) with her eighth kill Tuesday night. The Bogota, Colombia native also added eight digs and three blocks.
Estrada was joined in double figures by Maggie Nedoma, who recorded her second-straight double-digit kill performance with 10 kills on 29 attempts. She also tallied a team-best 3.5 blocks in just her fifth career match.
SIU got a boost in the middle as junior transfer middle hitter Patience Brown made her Saluki debut Tuesday, She recorded six kills on 15 swings and made her presence felt defensively, as she finished with three blocks. Fellow middle hitter Kolby Meeks finished with nine kills and 1.5 blocks.
Alayna Martin and Rachel Maguire split the setting duties, as Martin finished with 26 assists and nine digs, while Maguire dished out a season-best 18 assists and added six digs. Ashley Edelen set a new career-high with 24 digs while Alysa Sutton tied her personal-best with 16 digs.
The Salukis return to action this weekend at the Western Michigan Invitational. The Salukis open against Oakland (Mich.) on Fri., Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. before taking on the hosts, the Western Michigan Broncos, on Sat., Sept 9 at 7 p.m.
