Volleyball falls at Illinois State, 3-0

The Southern Illinois University volleyball team fell to the Illinois State Redbirds, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-8) in Missouri Valley Conference action Friday night inside Redbird Arena.
Inside the match
• Neither side led by more than one through the early part of the first set, as Southern tied the frame 9-all on a kill by Rachel Maguire. The Redbirds tallied three kills and took advantage of two Saluki hitting errors to build a five-point advantage, 14-9. Illinois State led by four, 15-11 at the media timeout and scored seven of the next eight points out of the timeout to effectively put the set out of reach.
• Southern got off to a fast start in the second set with three-straight points to open the frame. A double block by Kat Wagner and Patience Brown coupled with a Redbird error put SIU ahead 6-2 and prompted an early timeout by the Redbirds. An ace by Wagner and a Redbird error gave the Salukis their largest lead at 11-4 and forced Illinois State to take its second timeout.
• The Redbirds scored five of the next six points to get to within two, 12-10, but Southern extended its lead to four, 15-11 on a kill by Emma Baalman. Illinois State again had an answer, as it scored six of the next seven points to take a 17-16 lead. The two sides traded side out points until the Redbirds broke a 20-all tie with five-straight points to take the set.
• Illinois State hit .500 and limited the Salukis to a .000 hitting percentage in the third set to take the match. The Redbirds hitÂ
Inside the numbers
• The Salukis were playing without their top hitter, Maggie Nedoma, who did not play in the match but has led SIU in kills in 18 matches this season.
• Keera Clarke recorded double-digit digs for the fourth-straight match, as she set a new career-best with 21 digs. It marked the sixth time this season the Santa Monica, Calif. native has finished with 10-plus digs.
• Kat Wagner played all the way around and tallied five kills, eight digs, two assists and two aces. Her two aces tied a season-best.Â
• Alayna Martin notched her 10th double-double of the season with 17 assists and 13 digs. She also added two kills, a solo block and an ace.
• The Salukis tallied seven blocks and it marked the seventh time in nine Valley matches that Southern has finished with at least six total blocks.
