Volleyball drops Saturday match at Bradley

The Southern Illinois University volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to the Bradley Braves (25-16, 25-17, 25-20) in Missouri Valley Conference play inside Renaissance Coliseum. The Braves improve to 18-5 and 8-3 in the MVC, while the Salukis fall to 4-19 and 0-10 in Valley play.
Inside the Match
• The Braves scored four of the five points to grab an early 3-1 lead in t opening set. SIU got to within one on a block by Malivs Ortiz, 8-7 but Bradley responded with four of the next five points to take a 12-8 advantage.
• SIU answered with four-straight points with Keera Clarke at the service line to tie the set 12-all, but the Braves took a 15-12 lead into the media timeout with three unanswered points. Southern again got to within one, 15-14 on a double block by Lindsey Paulsen and Emma Baalman. The Braves scored ten of the next 12 points to take the opening set. Kat Wagner and Patience Brown each had three kills.Â
• Southern scored two of the first three points in set two, but the Braves ran off five-straight points to build a five-point lead, 7-2. Bradley increased its lead to nine with a service ace at 13-4 and kept that lead at the midway point, 15-6. Bradley took its largest lead 20-10. Southern got to within seven, 24-17 on Ortiz's third kill of the frame but the Braves sided out to take a 2-0 lead.Â
• The Braves had four aces in the second set and continued to serve aggressively in the third set.  Bradley scored the first five points behind two aces and built a 7-1 lead and increased its lead to seven, 10-3 with its ninth ace. Southern went to its bench and brought in Marissa Rossi and Paige Yoder to spark the offense and Southern got to within six, 14-8. SIU cut its deficit further with five-straight points to make it a four-point game, 20-16. Back-to-back points by Rachel Maguire got SIU back to within four, 22-18 but that was as close as they could get. All four of Maguire's kills came in the third set.Â
Inside the Numbers
• The Braves tallied 11 service aces, which is tied for the most SIU has allowed in a MVC match this season. Bradley also hit at a .301 clip for the match and limited Southern to a .157 hitting percentage.Â
• Eight different Salukis recorded at least one kill, led by five each from Emma Baalman and Patience Brown. Baalman hit a team-best .263 with five kills on 19 swings and no errors. She also added two blocks while Brown tallied four digs and a block assist.
• Alayna Martin finished a dig shy of a double-double with 20 assists and nine digs.Â
• Kat Wagner notched her ninth double digit dig performance of her career, as she totaled four kills, 10 digs and an ace.Â
• Jill Kavalauskas set a new career-high with nine digs and added two kills while Keera Clarke chipped in seven digs and an ace.
