The award is given to the most outstanding woman field athlete and was one of two awards Price took home.
Deanna Price, a two-time national champion and current volunteer assistant coach at SIU, was named the 2018 C.C. Jackson Award winner, the USATF announced at their annual award's banquet over the weekend.Â
The C.C. Jackson Award honors the top female USATF field athlete of the year. Two awards are presented annually in memory of C.C. Jackson, who was one of the foremost promoters of women's track and field. One award is given to the outstanding woman in running events while the other goes to the outstanding woman in field events.
It was one of two awards on the night for Price, who also claimed the Best Championship Field Performance Wing Award, an award that was determined by fan vote. The two awards were a fitting end of the year for the 2016 Olympian, who was a USATF Champion both indoors and outdoors.Â
"It means everything," Price said in an interview following her win. "Everyone tries to tell you you're a certain shape or you're a certain star. You know what, I've always realized that Im just me. As long as I keep my positivity and my happiness, everyone you come in contact with- the good and the bad- they shape you into who you are. The community of track and field is one  just love and adore. Being able to do this - to be one of the farthest hammer throwers in the world - I'm ready for 2020 and I can't wait to train and show what I can do."
Price had a terrific year in the circle. She set the American hammer throw record twice- first with a toss of 77.65m in Rathdrum, Idaho and she later regained her American record-holder crown after she unleashed the fourth-best toss all-time, 78.12m, to win the US outdoor title. It was the second national title of the year for the Moscow Mills, Mo. native, who threw a personal-best 24.51m to win the U.S. indoor weight throw title. She also won the hammer throw competition at the 2018 Continental Cup to help Team USA secure gold at the event and competed at the Athletics World Cup in London.
Price is only the second Saluki to win the C.C. Jackson Award since the award was first handed out in 1978. Connie Price-Smith also claimed the honor in 1995.
