CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southern Illinois men's basketball scored 48 points in the second half to earn an 83-73 road win at Southeast Missouri on Saturday night at the Show Me Center. The Salukis have won five games in a row and seven of their last eight games.Â
"Winning on the road is really hard, but winning on the road is really fun," SIU head coach Barry Hinson said.
Aaron Cook, Sean Lloyd Jr., and Kavion Pippen did almost all of the damage, combining for 66 points on 23-of-36 shooting (64 percent). The trio scored 42 of the team's 48 second-half points and went 13-for-17 from the field after the break. Lloyd scored a career-high 25 points in the game, 19 of which came in the second half.
"The shots he took were great shots. He had a great pace about him. He didn't get sped up," Hinson said of Lloyd.
SIU (7-3) took a 35-33 lead into the break and came out of halftime pounding the ball into the paint. The Salukis started the second half 9-for-10 from the field, and Pippen was 6-for-6 from the field in the second half (9-of-11 for the game). After halftime, SIU outscored SEMOÂ 18-to-8 in points in the paint and went 4-for-6 from the 3-point line.Â
SIU went on a 13-2 run midway through the second half to push the lead to 19 points. The Redhawks (5-5) hit a slew of late 3-pointers to get as close as nine points late in the game, but the Salukis went 18-for-22 from the free throw line to make sure SEMO never truly threatened.Â
"Give them credit. The shots they hit, those were big-time shots," Hinson said. "They played really well from the perimeter, and we didn't do a great job defensively on the exterior, but I thought we did a good job on the interior."
Playing without leading scorer Armon Fletcher, who was suspended for violation of team rules, SIU still matched its season-high points total (83) and had 21 assists on 28 field goals.Â
In addition to Lloyd's career high in points, guards Marcus Bartley (7) and Eric McGill (8) set career highs in rebounds and led SIU to a 37-28 rebounding advantage.Â
The Salukis picked up their third-straight true road win and fourth-straight win away from Carbondale, including a neutral-site win over Tulsa, which beat No. 16 Kansas State today. The road winning streak is the longest for SIU since 2015-16.Â
UP NEXT: SIU hosts Murray State on Wednesday night at SIU Arena. The Racers are led by Ja Morant, a projected top-10 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Tickets are available at SIUSalukis.com/tickets or by calling 877-SALUKIS.Â
