Katelyn Massa named MVC Player of the Week

For the first time in her career, Saluki sophomore catcher Katelyn Massa was named as the MVC Player of the Week following her accomplishments at the Gamecock Invitational this past weekend.

The sophomore catcher and designated player totaled 9 RBI, 3 Home Runs, 2 doubles, 2 walks and a grand slam. In total, she hit .455 on the weekend. In the first game of the weekend, Massa helped hand Mercer its first loss of the season with a solo homerun in the first inning. Later in the game, she would hit her first of two RBI doubles of the weekend to put Southern out front 6-1. Against Georgetown, she hit a two-home run in the first inning then continued to generate power with a grand slam in the second to put Southern out front 6-0. She would draw a walk later in the game. She was responsible for nearly half of Southern's 13 runs in the game. In the weekend closer against Michigan State, Massa broke up a shutout in the fifth inning by hitting her second RBI double of the weekend into the gap in left-center.

On the season, Massa is hitting .348 with a team leading 4 home runs and 11 RBI. She's also walked 4 times and struck out just once. She leads the league in home runs.

Massa and the Salukis are back in action this weekend when the team heads to Fort Myers, Florida for four games at a tournament hosted by Florida Gulf Coast.
