Saluki alumnae place 1-2-3 in the women's weight throw.
Saluki alumna DeAnna Price won the weight throw at the 2018 USATF Indoor Championships on Sunday, Feb. 18 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.Â
The 2016 Olympian and volunteer assistant coach was one of three Saluki alumnae to finish in the top-3 Sunday, as she was followed by Jeneva (McCall) Stevens and SIU Hall of Famer Gwen Berry.Â
Price, who made her season debut at the Don DeNoon Invitational on Feb. 3 and had just seven practices before competing in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Sunday. The Moscow Mills, Mo. native threw a personal-best 80'-5" (24.51m) to win her first national title since turning pro.Â
A year after taking second to Berry in the weight at the 2017 USATF Indoor Championships, Price took the lead on her second attempt with a toss of 78'-5" (23.90m). Her winning mark came on her third attempt and she tallied four throws that were over 78'-5".Â
Stevens equaled her best finish in the weight throw at the event in her sixth appearance, as she threw 79'-6" (24.23m) on her third attempt to finish second. She also finished second in the weight in 2015 and was the runner-up in the shot put at the 2013 and 2014 USATF Indoor Championships. Stevens also added a third place finish in the shot put at 58'-03.75" (17.77m).Â
Gwen Berry, who won back-to-back weight throw titles in 2016 and 2017 and had won four of the last five weight throw titles at the USATF Indoor Championships, earned a spot on the podium with her toss of 78'-6.25" (23.93m) to finish third.
Kyle Landon finished seventh in the high jump with a clearance of 7'-2.25" (2.14m), while Josh Freeman failed to record a legal mark on his three attempts in the shot put. Jared Kern's mark from the EIU Friday Night Special of 65'-5.5"Â (19.93m) would have placed Kern third at the 2018 USATF Indoor Championships.
The 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships does not sponsor the weight throw, so while Price's win comes with a monetary windfall befit of a champion, she will not represent Team USA at the meet.
