AROUND THE HORN
- Southern Illinois travels to Edwardsville for a game against sister school SIUe on Tuesday afternoon. The teams are playing for the first time since 2010.
- SIU leads the all-time series, 23-9. The teams have played only three times since 1992, with the Salukis sweeping a three-game series from the Cougars.
- SIU is 4-0 against OVC schools during mid-week play this year. SIU has beaten Austin Peay, SEMO, Murray State and Belmont during mid-week games.
- SIUe is playing just its third mid-week game of the season. The Cougars pitched bullpen games both times, using five pitchers at Wichita (none longer than 2 innings) and eight pitchers against Saint Louis (each for one inning).
- Southern Illinois starting pitcher Mason Hiser is coming off the strongest outing of his season. Hiser did not allow an earned run in 5.0 innings against Northern Illinois on March 10 and earned his first Division I victory.
- SIU ranks fourth in the nation with 56 stolen bases.
- Last year's SIU team stole 100 bases, which led the MVC by 46 and ranked 14th nationally.
- Connor Kopach leads the nation individually with 16 stolen bases. For context, 125 of 297 Division I baseball programs have fewer steals this season than Kopach.
- In the last five games, SIU is 18-for-19 on stolen base attempts (95 percent).
- Five of the top-10 base stealers in the MVC are Salukis. Kopach (1st), Alex Lyon (2nd), Nikola Vasic (3rd), Addison Fugitt (t-6th), and Kenton Crawford (t-8th). Kopach leads the nation in steals and Lyon ranks 11th.
- During mid-week games, Alex Lyon is hitting .467 and Connor Kopach is hitting .450.
- SIU's offense is taking 5.65 free bases per game this season (walks or HBP). Last year's rate was 4.3 free bases per game (+1.35 per game improvement this year). The 2018 "free-base rate" is currently second-best in program history, behind 1980's 7.16 free passes per game.
- The Salukis were picked fourth in the preseason MVC poll of head coaches. Starting pitcher Michael Baird, closer Ryan Netemeyer, and shortstop Connor Kopach were all named preseason All-MVC.
- SIU has led the MVC in double plays turned in four of the last five years.
