Massa earns second MVC Weekly Honor of 2018

For the second time this year and the second of her career, Katelyn Massa has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, this time for her explosive offensive outings in the MVC-opening week.

Massa hit .692 in four games with two doubles, a home run and 10 RBI. She also was a perfect 2-2 in catching runners attempting to steal.

In Southern's mid-week game on Wednesday against UT-Martin, Massa was responsible for both of the Salukis' runs in the 2-1 victory. She hit a go ahead RBI single in the seventh inning that would prove to be the winning run. Overall, she was 4-4 at the plate with two RBI in that game. In the weekend opener against Loyola, Massa went 2-4 with three RBI. Her RBI double in the sixth inning clinched the game for Southern by way of the mercy rule. In the Salukis lone loss on the week, Massa was responsible for both runs again thanks to a two-RBI single. In the final game of the weekend, Massa went 2-3 with a three-run homerun, her sixth of the season.

On the season, Massa is hitting .364 with 8 doubles, 6 home runs and 28 RBI. She's also stuck out just four times all year and leads the team in walks with 14. Her 54 total bases are best in the Valley, she's also tops in RBI per game and 50th in the NCAA in the category.

Massa has already surpassed her 2017 totals in: runs scored, doubles, home runs and RBI.

Massa last won the MVC's Player of the Week Award on Feb. 19. This is Southern's 124th MVC Weekly Award, the Salukis lead the Valley all-time in Weekly Awards. Southern last won a Weekly Award last week when junior pitcher Brianna Jones was named the MVC Pitcher of the Week. This is the third time the Salukis have won a Weekly Award this year.
