Maloney will represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines and is scheduled to compete in three events during the three-day event.
CARBONDALE, Ill. - Saluki sprinter Shafiqua Maloney will represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) at the 2018 Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Games in Nassau, Bahamas from March 30-April 2.Â
The CARIFTA Games are an annual international youth athletics event started in 1972 for the member states of the Caribbean Free Trade Association. The event has long been considered a showcase of world class talent, with one needing to look no further for an example than the 2004 games in which a 17-year old Usain Bolt broke the World Junior 200m record with a time of 19.93.
Maloney is one of 12 athletes set to represent Saint Vincent and the Grenadines at the 2018 Games and is slated to run the 200 meter dash, the 400 meter dash and the 4x400 relay in the U-20 division. This will mark the fourth time that Maloney will represent SVG at the CARIFTA Games.Â
At the 2016 games, Maloney finished sixth in the 400m, helped SVG's 4x400 relay to a sixth place finish and competed in the 200m. At the 2015 Junior CARIFTA Games, Maloney was one of two athletes to represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines but was limited in competition due to a hamstring injury.Â
At her first Junior CARIFTA games in 2013, which were also held at the T.A. Robinson National Track and Field Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas, Maloney clocked the fourth-best qualifying time in the 300m hurdles to advance to the finals. She finished eighth in the 300m hurdles and later took ninth in the 400m dash.
Last summer, Maloney represented St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the Pan-American U-20 Track and Field Championships in Lima, Peru where she advanced to the 400m final and eventually took eighth.
Shafiqua will run the prelims of the 400m on Saturday, March 31 at 10:50 a.m. EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) before she runs the 200m on Sunday, April 1 at 11:20 a.m. and will close competition with the 4x400 relay on Monday, April 2 at 10 a.m.
