For the third time this year, a player from Southern earned MVC Player of the Week honors. This time it is sophomore infielder Maddy Vermejan that earned the honor.
Â
Vermejan put together the best week of her career hitting .556 with 10 RBIs and three home runs. In a mid-week doubleheader at Missouri State, she went 1-2 in the first game with a run scored, a hit-by-pitch and a walk. In game two, she went 3-4 with an RBI.
Â
In the weekend series at Bradley, Vermejan was responsible for eight of Southern's 32 runs on the weekend. In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, she tied the program record for RBIs in a game with seven. She had two home runs and a double in the tilt. On Sunday, Vermejan added to her great weekend with two doubles an inside the park home run and two more RBI. Her efforts at the plate this week moved her batting average from .346 to .376.
Â
Vermejan more than doubled her season homerun total on the week. She now had five homers, 26 RBIs, second-most on the team, and 10 doubles, which is also second best. She's tied for the team lead in steals with five and leads the team in average and on-base percentage.
Â
This is Vermejan's first time earning a Weekly award from the MVC. This is Southern's 125th MVC Weekly Award, the Salukis lead the Valley all-time in Weekly Awards. Southern last won a Weekly Award on March 19 when sophomore Katelyn Massa was named the MVC's player of the week. This is the fourth time the Salukis have won a Weekly Award this year.
