Hurley named MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week

The four-time All-MVC honoree tallied three top-3 finishes and a pair of top-10 school marks at the Mondo Team Challenge.
ST. LOUIS — Southern Illinois thrower Ricky Hurley has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week following his performance at the Mondo Team Challenge, the conference announced Tuesday.
It marks the second time this season that Hurley has been named the MVC Men's Field Athlete of the Week. He also earned the award after he set lifetime-bests in both the weight throw and the shot put at the Music City Challenge on Feb. 10.
Hurley and North Dakota's Steffan Stroh are the only two athletes in the NCAA West Region to currently rank in the top-50 of all three throwing disciplines (shot put, hammer throw, discus).

Ricky Hurley tallied three top-3 finishes and a pair of top-10 school marks at the Mondo Team Challenge, hosted by Sacramento State. The Fox River Grove, Ill. native won the hammer throw, took second in the shot put and placed third in the discus to score 24 points and help Southern win the men's team title. In the hammer throw, Hurley won with a toss of 59'-8.25" (18.19m), which was the seventh-best throw in school history and he later took second in the shot put with the eighth-best mark in program history at 59'-8.25" (18.19m). Hurley and North Dakota's Steffan Stroh are the only two athletes in the NCAA West Region to currently rank in the top-50 of all three throwing disciplines, as the four-time all-conference honoree ranks 13th in the west region in the shot put, 15th in the hammer throw and 46th in the discus. Hurley also holds the top spot in the Missouri Valley Conference in both the hammer and the discus and ranks second in the shot put.
