Alex Lyon named MVC Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois outfielder Alex Lyon was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Lyon led the Salukis to a 4-0 week with five RBIs and five stolen bases.Â
Lyon went 8-for-18 (.444) for Southern Illinois last week. He had two doubles and a triple to post a .667 slugging percentage, and he scored four runs in wins over SEMO and Evansville. He was a perfect 5-for-5 stealing bases and added a sacrifice fly. In Sunday's sweep-clinching win at Evansville, Lyon went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, a double and a triple. In SIU's road sweep at Evansville, Lyon was particularly impressive. He went 7-for-14 (.500) with four runs scored, five RBIs and four stolen bases.
Lyon, a transfer from Volunteer State, earned the award for the second time this season. Since 2003, Greg Andrews (once in each 2003 and 2004) is the only other Saluki to earn the honor twice in a career.
Bradley's Mitch Janssen edged out SIU's Michael Baird for the league's Pitcher of the Week award. Janssen pitched 10.1 innings of three-hit, one-run baseball against Illinois and Missouri State, while Baird threw a complete-game five-hit shutout at Evansville with a career-high 12 strikeouts.Â
Southern Illinois travels to Champaign, Ill., to face Illinois on Tuesday before hosting a weekend series against Indiana State this weekend at Itchy Jones Stadium.Â
