CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Illinois baseball team scored three runs in the third inning and five in the fifth to run away from Southern Illinois, 9-1, on Tuesday night at Illinois Field. SIU was out-hit 13-2 in the loss.
"It was a bad night," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "We have to put it behind us and go back and get ready for the weekend. We have to get back to work. We didn't play well."
SIU took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. After an error allowed Brad Harrison to reach base, Mitch Fairfield knocked him home with a two-out, two strike RBI single. After that, SIU had just two base runners the rest of the game, both on walks.
SIU starting pitcher Dylan Givens had his 16-inning scoreless streak snapped in the third inning. Bren Spillane tied the game with an RBI single. With two runners in scoring position and one out, a sacrifice fly gave Illinois the lead, and a throwing error added another run to make it a 3-1 game.
Givens got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth inning, but the Illini scored five times in the fifth to blow the game open. The big hit was a wind-aided three-run homer by Dorin Turchin, and Zac Taylor followed that up with a homer of his own.
Justin Yeager was SIU's bright spot on the mound. Yeager entered into a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the sixth inning and got out of it without allowing a run. He followed that up with a scoreless seventh inning. He retired all six batters he faced and did not issue a walk.
"He was good," Henderson said of Yeager. "He threw strikes. If you throw strikes, you get opportunities. We've known all along he has great stuff. As long as he continues to throw strikes, he can be a valuable guy for us. Certainly, he's done that the last two times out, and that will earn him more opportunities."
Yeager lowered his season ERA to 3.18 with the two scoreless frames. In his last three appearances, Yeager has allowed just one hit in four innings, and he has struck out seven while walking none.
SIU returns to Missouri Valley Conference action with a three-game series at home against Indiana State this weekend. Friday night's game starts at 6:30 p.m. at Itchy Jones Stadium. Starting with the Indiana State series, SIU has 10 games remaining in the regular season before the MVC Tournament.
