Nine Saluki Teams posted perfect APR scores for the 2016-17 academic year.
CARBONDALE, Ill. Â - Three of SIU's intercollegiate athletic programs were honored Wednesday with NCAA Public Recognition Awards and a total of nine Saluki teams posted perfect Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores.Â
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. Each student-athlete receiving athletically-related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and another point for being academically eligible. A team's total points are then divided by points possible and multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team's Academic Progress Rate. Teams must earn a 930 four-year average APR or a 940 average over the most recent two year period to participate in NCAA Championships.
SIU's three programs that received NCAA Public Recognition Awards include women's golf, women's swimming and diving and volleyball. It is the first time that SIU's women's swimming and diving team has earned the honor and just the third time, and first since 2005-06, that Southern's women's golf team claimed the award. SIU's volleyball team, meanwhile, has now taken home the honor five times, which is second to SIU's softball team (7) for most in program history.Â
In addition, nine teams posted perfect APR scores for the 2016-17 academic year. SIU's men's cross country, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, softball, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis and volleyball all earned an APR score of 1,000.
Based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate, teams earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting scores in the top-10 percent of their sport. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
Southern has had seven different teams receive public recognition a total of 19 times and have had at least one team earn the award in nine of the honor's 11 years.
