Indiana State takes series at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Indiana State jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and cruised to a series-deciding 11-3 win over Southern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium. The Sycamores won the series, 2-1.
"We just got beat," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "They outplayed us in every area. They were better at the plate and better on the mound. I thought we showed up with good energy and good effort. We were ready to go. Again, we got down early and were battling uphill all day. They played harder and played better than us. We're not playing very well. We haven't played well in three or four weeks, but everything is in front of us. We have to get back to work, figure some things out and get back to how we were playing three or four weeks ago."
Indiana State (24-20, 6-9 MVC) hit three home runs in the first four innings—a solo shot in the second, a two-run shot in the third, and a three-run homer in the fourth—to grab an early 6-0 lead. Alex Lyon hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth for SIU (25-23, 8-7 MVC), but that was Southern's only scoring until the bottom of the ninth, when Indiana State held an 11-1 lead.
"We're looking for good swings," Henderson said. "We're having trouble scoring runs. I don't have the answer. A lot of times in those situations, guys are trying to do to much. I watch our swings in BP, and they're really good. Then those swings disappear during the games. I want to see guys start competing at the plate. I don't care about hits or good averages, but I want to see good approaches and good ABs and guys who are competing at the plate."
The Salukis dropped just its second MVC series of the year and dropped its first home series since mid-March against nationally ranked Illinois.
"We're going to take a couple days off," Henderson said. "It's finals week, and we will get away from the game for a couple days. We will come back Wednesday and work on a couple things. The great news is that it's all fixable."
SIU will not play a mid-week game this week with the student-athletes taking finals. The Salukis travel to MVC-leading Missouri State next weekend for a three-game series against the Bears. That series starts a string of seven games in nine days to close the regular season before the MVC Tournament May 23-26 in Dallas, Texas.
