ST. LOUIS - Four Southern Illinois baseball players were named to the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team, the league announced Tuesday. Michael Baird (P) and Logan Blackfan (1B) were first-team selections. Brad Harrison (P) and Jamison Steege (P) were honorable mention choices.Â
Saluki Baseball has placed at least two student-athletes on the MVC Scholar-Athlete team for seven consecutive seasons.Â
Baird earned first-team All-MVCÂ as a senior in 2018. He was second in the league in ERA (3.16), innings pitched (99.2) and strikeouts (92)--the only player in the league in the top two in all three categories. During the spring semester, Baird posted a perfect 4.0 term GPA and graduated in May with a degree in speech communication. In his career, Baird is a two-time first-team All-MVCÂ pitcher and ranks in the top-10 in school history in games started (2nd), innings pitched (2nd), and strikeouts (6th).Â
Blackfan earned a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team for the second time in his career, having also earned the honor in 2016. Blackfan was second-team All-MVC in 2018 after a career year, hitting .328 with 11 home runs and 62 RBIs. His 62 RBIs are seventh-most in a single season in program history. Blackfan ends his career ranking in the top-10 in school history in doubles (1st), RBIs (3rd), career games played (5th), total bases (6th), and at-bats (8th). Blackfan graduated in May with a degree in exercise science.Â
Harrison and Steege each earned a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete honorable mention team in their first year eligible for the honor. Harrison, a sophomore, was a three-time MVC Pitcher of the Week and three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week this season. He finished the year ranking fourth in the MVC in strikeouts. Steege started 13 games for the Salukis this year, striking out 38 batters and earning four wins. He pitched eight shutout innings against North Florida and seven shutout innings against UC Irvine. Steege graduated in May with a degree in Agricultural Systems and Education.Â
To be eligible for MVC Scholar-Athlete honors, student-athletes must be in their second year at the institution and carry a minimum of 3.20 cumulative GPA. The voting for the MVC Scholar-Athlete team was done by the MVC baseball sports information directors.Â
In Henderson's tenure, SIU has earned 24 MVC Scholar-Athlete honors.Â
