Southern Illinois is currently number one in the NCAA® Team Works™ Helper Helper Service Challenge Division I category for their community outreach efforts. The challenge runs Sept. 1 through Nov. 30 and focuses on promoting goodwill in communities. Salukis student-athletes volunteer with many local organizations, including the Marion VA Medical Center, St. Francis CARE Animal Shelter, and Habitat for Humanity.
NCAA Team Works, which coordinates community service at NCAA championships, along with Helper Helper, a volunteer and tracking platform, launched the challenge to recognize student-athletes who give back to their communities. This year marks the 5th year of the NCAA Service Challenge. Colleges track their community service hours and the winning school receives a championship trophy. During last year's competition, student-athletes made a $2 million dollar economic impact in their communities.
The current top five schools in the Division I competition are Southern Illinois University, University of Miami, Northern Illinois University, Charlotte 49ers, and Boise State University.
